A few months back, I wrote the post Being Optimus Prime, where I discussed voice actor Peter Cullen’s inspiration for the voice of Optimus Prime. It can be best summed up in a line he heard from his brother, Larry: ”be strong enough to be gentle”
I tied this line in to the often contradictory expectations for the 21st man. Men are expected to be strong; yet they are ridiculed if they act like a proverbial bull in a China shop. Likewise, we are expected to have a heart; but don’t show too much emotion out of fear of looking weak. Today, I know that this idea has been attributed to others, including General Douglas McArthur. I assume that that’s where Larry Cullen – himself a veteran – adopted this philosophy.
I’ve made no secret out of the fact that I have and continue to look up to Optimus Prime as a source of inspiration. His enemies respected him; even feared him. But his friends knew his greatest strength lay in his compassion.
What I want people to say about me; what I want to be remembered for; what I want people to describe me as when I shed this mortal coil is “He was strong enough to be gentle”.
- What is one thing you hope people will say about you?
- What are your thoughts on the “strong enough to be gentle” philosophy?
- Is Rob insane for idolizing an aminated robot/truck??
