full circle

After originally applying 19 years ago, today I was hired by my local school district; the very school district that I went through as a kid myself. I will be making slightly less money than I have been in my current (now-previous) position; however, the new district presents more professional opportunities and room for growth.

This may be the change that I’ve been anticipating in my life for some time. I wrote about this recently in my “state of the man address“.

I have this tendency to stay in one place for too long. I’m not saying that I want to be a nomad or anything, but when I get comfortable, I tend to ignore the proverbial writing on the wall. And before I know it, decisions are made without my input, and my destiny ends up controlling me.

This is a little bit risky for me. But I’ve been playing it relatively safe with my career for the last few years. I’m taking a gamble on myself professionally; but I’m worth it.

I remember once, just before I started teaching full-time, when I was substitute teaching. I was actually working at my old high school that day. I met a teacher during lunch. He was in his first year in my new district, and himself I transferred out of my old district. He had 20 years experience in my old district, very similar to me right now. It’s funny because now I’m that guy, only 20 years later.

Life really has a way of bringing things full circle. It’s like my experience with Boss Lady from a few years back. It may take years, maybe even decades, but the universe does have its own way of giving you closure.
