Beer, dude

What’s your favorite word?

Is like to say something really profound, like “love” is my favorite word; but that would just be disingenuous. At the moment, my two favorite words are probably “beer” and “dude”

beer

I’m sure that my liking of this word is somewhat sophomoric. I mean, when you’re a teenager, beer is automatically seen as a symbol of rebellion; so there is absolutely a cool factor to it when you’re young.

But just look at that word. There’s a sense of whimsy to it. Maybe it’s the double e’s; but it almost like the word is smiling at you when you say it. The same is true when you say the word. Just to utter the word forces you mouth to almost smile – withstanding any negative connotations that might come along with the word. Of course, I guess we can say the same about the words deer and veneer.

The same is true with the word, dude

dude

Dude, it’s just a fun word to say. And the fact that you can use it and so many different contexts. Dude can be verbal filler. It can be an exclamation. It could be a term of affection? It could be a question. And like beer, it just looks like a fun word to say.

From Spider-Man : No Way Home

In this opening scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, picks up immediately after the shocking cliff-hanger ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home. We hear Peter Parker and his friend Ned’s reaction to these revelations. One word can say so much…

Baseketball features prominently features the words Dude” AND a sports team name “beers””

I’m this scene from Baseketball, we see Joe (Trey Parker) and Doug (Matt Stone) arguing. During this conversation, they repeatedly refer to each other as “dude”. As the argument escalates, both characters argue their point more passionately, both side whittle their points down to the aforementioned “dude”. They reach a conclusion, with a questioning “dude?”, and finally a reassuring “dude…”

Are there any other words in English language we really do this with?

Honorable mention: bioluminescence

This is a really cool scientific phenomenon and worth noting. If you don’t know what it means, look here!
