What food would you say is your specialty?
My first foray into cooking started when I was a Boy Scout. During my first year of summer camp, I decided to earn the cooking merit badge. Granted, cooking while camping is pretty limited; especially as a twelve-year-old Once I got the badge, it would often fall on to me to cook, or at least help cook, on subsequent camping trips.
I didn’t really mind. Cooking just became a role that I served on the camping trips. it always reminded me of the war move trope where one of the guys in unit was some kind of culinary genius, being able to make a seven course meal out of canned veggies, a rock and ball of tin foil – a McGuyver in the kitchen, so to speak. I like to cook, even though I’m not very good at it.
The odd thing is that, as a picky eater myself, I’ll make things that I personally wouldn’t eat. But I like the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that I get from preparing a meal, and seeing people enjoy it. Since I’ve started cooking back as a Boy Scout, I’ve always made of point of thanking whoever has prepared my meal.
I haven’t cooked very much in the last few years. I have a hard time rationalizing cooking for one; so unless Kid 1 or Kid 2, or a lady-friend are over, Back in my previous lives with X1 and X2, I thought nothing about cooking. I enjoyed it. Of course, if I cooked, they did the dishes.
However, one dish that probably is my “specialty” – if I have a cooking specialty – is teriyaki chicken. What I make is nothing special. It was a recipe that I found on the internet. Sometimes I would try to change it up with ingredients. However, as a picky eater, it’s tough sometimes to say: “this could use more…”. Probably the most unique twist I would add is making the teriyaki sauce from scratch. Admittedly, I would buy the sauce in a bottle when I was feeling a little lazy.
Do you cook? If so, what dish is your specialty? if you don’t cook, why not?
