What does it mean to be a kid at heart?
There’s an old expression that says “age is not a time of life; it is a state of mind” or words to that effect.
I sincerely believe that being a kid at heart means maintains that youthful state of mind. There’s a fire with being young: an indomitable energy, a passion for wanting to right wrongs in the world. Young people see the errors in the older generations ways and want to fix them. There is also a curiosity that comes with youth. Young people want to see the world and understand it. They want to experience life.
To paraphrase a famous movie line, being young means you never say you’re “too old” for something. while writing this post, I came across this article that talks about growing old, having a youthful mindset and The Maturity Principle. It’s definitely worth a read!
In a previous post, I was talking about what age is too old to go trick-or-treating. The Young At Heart don’t even have to ask that question. Personally, I don’t ever really recall thinking to myself “I’m too old to go trick or treating”. I just stopped going one day.
I like to think of myself as young at heart. Most days, I really don’t think about the fact that I’m 49. When I think of 49, I think of my parents. Mark Hamill talked about this I’m an interview before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He was stunned to realize that he was then the same age that Sir Alec Guinness was at the time of filming the original Star Wars. Unfortunate I can’t find the original article to link to it, but Hamill was stunned to think of himself as ever being the same age as Guinness. I like Rolling Stones! I like The Three Stooges! He argued.

One thing I’ve noticed is that lot of adults seem to pick a decade that they liked and dress that way forever. That has definitely happened with me. For a time, I thought that I dressed too much like a kid; but I know better now. Kids today don’t dress like I do. Looking at some of my clothes, you’d think I was stuck in the 90s.
As much as I’m twenty-something forever in my mind, I can feel my body starting to slow down. Muscles are sore. My body makes noises in the kinds of place that I only used to think happened to old people. At 49 1/2, I’m going through a reckoning of sorts. Time is catching up to my anatomy.
This is a topic I could probably talk about all day, but What does it mean -to you – to be a kid at heart? Is age a time or life or a state of mind?
