Before I start, to all my fellow WordPressers, has anyone else noticed that the mobile app for WordPress gives a different daily writing prompt than the website? I had both open just now and did even see this particular prompt on the website. Weird…

My new holiday would be “Off Day”. What is lacks in a name it makes up for in its timing.

The purpose of Off Day is, as the name states simply taking the day off. It would fall in the last Monday of February. My reasoning for this is that it would be roughly 3 months before Memorial Day here in America, which itself is roughly 3 months before Labor Day. For my international readers, Memorial Day and Labor Day are the unofficial star and end of the summer season domestically.

In the tradition of said summer holidays, Off Day will be the unofficial “good bye and good riddance” to winter. “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles will be the anthem of Off Day.

Off Day will not be steeped in any ancient rituals. People will spend the day as they see fit. One can sleep in, travel, visit (or better yet not visit) with extended family as they see fit. For most people, Off Day will most likely resemble a Memorial Day or Labor Day weekend; and that is the point.

Of course, with so many people having an extra day off, the reality is that some people will still have to work. Business conducted on Off Day should be limited to essential workers – the same people who were deemed essential during the pandemic. In the exchange for working on Off Day, all essential workers will receive triple time pay.

For the record, I’m not usually not a “sunshine and rainbows” kid of person; but the reality is that winter sucks. More than that, winter in the Midwest Unites States is God-awful. People need something to remind that them that better weather and longer days are coming; and Groundhog Day just doesn’t cut it.
