My favorite school subject

What was your favorite subject in school?

My favorite subject in school was the same one that I teach today: English.

As far back as I can remember, I’ve always enjoyed reading and I was good at it too – if I may toot my own horn. From a young age, my aunt (my mom’s sister) nurtured that love of reading in me more than anyone else. She was an avid reader herself, and I think she picked up on my enjoyment of books. When other relatives were gifting me toys, clothes or money (or nothing) she was getting me books. Most of the time, these weren’t books that I had been asking for; they were books she thought I would like based on my interests.

“A language is not just words. It’s a culture, a tradition, unification of a community, a whole history that creates what a community is. It’s all embodied in a language”

Noam Chomsky

I believe language – communication, the written word and verbal language are the most important cornerstones of any civilization. Yes math and the sciences are very important, but their rules are universal. It’s the uniqueness of language that distinguishes one culture from another. I’m assuming you feel very strongly about reading and writing, or else you wouldn’t be reading this blog now.

Also, as a student, I like that the arts are more subjective. There are many different answers. The shortest distance between to points isn’t necessarily a straight line and one plus two doesn’t always have to equal three. Things are open to interpretation.
