The deer, the coyote, and the fox

Do you ever see wild animals?

No, I’m not on some drug-induced spirit quest. These are three examples of wildlife that I have seen living in a rural – then eventually back in – a suburban area.

For about 3 years, X2 and I lived in a small rural town about 45 minutes west of Ann Arbor. It is, by far, the smallest town in which I have ever lived. It was nothing to see deer darting across field or ever paved roads in a daily basis. Honestly I saw more wildlife there than when I lived down South. Let me just say that as long as I have my way, I will never live in a town that small again.

Moving back to my hometown 3 years ago I was surprised at how many deer i now see in the area. In addition to the deer, it’s not unusual to see foxes and coyote now in this area.

It’s crazy because this is a hyper developed suburb. And it has been for decades. When I came to realize upon seeing all this additional wildlife around here is that human sprawl just continues. I read a while back where they said the world’s population has surpassed 7 billion. There’s an awful lot of terrain on this planet where humans cannot or do not, live. I’m just starting to wonder where the hell we’re gonna put all these people in another 20 years.

Perhaps, even stranger than this phenomenon, is seeing some of the wild animals that are showing back up in parts of Detroit proper. Keeping in mind, that parts of the city have been in a state of urban blight for the better part of 60 years, it makes sense that animals would naturally begin to return to these areas that humans have abandoned.

Beyond these 3, the only other wild animals I see are in the zoo.

What are some wild animals you see in the arena in which you live?
