Rebuilding the Spirit…or Feelling Derek Zoolander

What is something others do that sparks your admiration?

It’s funny, because I feel like my mind has been going to the same place as where these prompts have been going, albeit three or four days earlier…

What impresses me, not just about individual persons, but about a lot of people in general is how much people get involved in volunteer or charity work.

I think it’s a little different today than it was for, let’s say, my generation, because I know that in a lot of high schools, students have to do some sort of community service work before they graduate. We never had any such requirements for Gen X.

People can say what they want to about community service thing mandated upon today’s kids, but the fact of the matter is it exposes them to it. And exposing them to it, normalizes community service for them.

There’s a bit in the first Zoolander movie where Derek explains to his manager, Maury that he was thinking of retiring from male modeling:

“I want to do something meaningful with my life Maury…The other day I was thinking about volunteering to help teach underprivileged children to learn how to read. And just thinking about it was the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had”

That’s pretty much where I’m at. Right now, even thinking about the idea volunteering my time is more rewarding than most things I’ve ever done in my life. Not only does seeing other people do charity/volunteer, work spark my admiration, but it has also inspired me to get in on the action as well.

Right about the time I started laying out a blueprint for 2024, I was also thinking that I want to get involved in some sort of charity/volunteer/community service work. In fact, if you check back on that post, you’ll see that volunteer work is listed there.

I’m not exactly sure what I would want to do, but I think I’ve narrowed it down between something involving the Humane Society/ASPCA, Habitat for Humanity, or something involving children’s Hospital work. Once I really “get my foot in the door with it” I would eventually like to do something to incorporate whatever charity work I do into my classroom. Even if it’s as simple as making holiday cards for hospitalized kids.

I just wanted to do something for somebody else. No ulterior motives. No “what’s in it for me“. I just want to do something for somebody else; because I have the time and/or the resources to contribute.

What is one thing you see others do that sparks your admiration in them?
