This one’s been a long time coming…
I can’t even remember where or when I first crossed paths with the woman whom i shall forever after refer to on this blog as The Chanteuse.
I want to say it was on one of the dating apps a few years back. We talked a bit. For one reason or another, we never went out but we did become friends on social media. It turned out we had quite a bit in common. We’re both English teachers. And as you can tell from her alias, we are music fans. She sings in a band. In fact, at one point I think she was looking into giving up her day job to pursue music full-time.
From the moment I saw her, wherever it was, I was smitten. Maybe that makes me a superficial guy. But in the world of online dating, visuals are really your first impression. Even on social media, she had this confidence that oozes off the screen. It’s the eyes. I’m a sucker for powerful, intense eyes – and she’s got two of them.
A few weeks back I saw her post on social media that her band was playing at a local bar. The stars lined up perfectly. I’m kid-free this weekend and I just got paid. And in the spirit of doing the things I’ve wanted to do for years, I decided to check out her band.
I got to the bar about an hour into their set. I heard her so lead vocals on “some kid of wonderful. I made a new line to the bathroom as it was the last so of their set. I think she must have seen me as she cut me off as I exited the bathroom.
She definitely knew I was there to see her. Not the band, but her. We talked. Her friend had even come up to me one point during the band and asked me, point-blank “you came out tonight to see her?” I plainly responded “yeah”. So it definitely got The Chanteuse’s attention.
I have to admit that I was trying to play cool last night. I don’t mean like “alpha male, cool“ I mean, just low-key. I wasn’t trying to draw too much attention to myself like “I’m here and I’m your biggest fan!” She introduced me to a couple of her other friends, so I was social. I made my presence felt at any rate.
Here’s the thing: I have no intention of becoming a groupie or anything like that. I went to see her band play last night, because I knew it was important to the Chanteuse. Obviously music is something she’s very passionate about. I’m more interested in getting to know the real person, not just the person who sings up onstage.
I’d like to think that the story is just beginning. But who knows? At any rate, I’m going to be sure that I shoot my shot…
