It’s natural to not only lose interest in thigs over time, but also to have things that you simply “outgrow”. And while there are things, undoubtedly, that I have outgrown over time, one thing that comes to mind in particular that I feel like I have, not so much lost interest in as lost passion about is, going to concerts.
Don’t get me wrong: I still love live music however, the big concert experience – either at an amphitheater, or an indoor venue, or even a baseball or football stadium has really just grown stale for me. I still like the music, but the idea of being in a crowd with a lot of people who are either getting drunk or getting high or in some cases trying to get laid has just really lost interest for me. I loved this experience when I was in my 20s, and then I kind of got out of it in my 30s. By my 40s I just started feeling like one of the older people at the show. Unfortunately, this is not a new feeling for me regarding concerts. In fact, I posted about this very topic exactly 10 years and one day in an article I call Feeling Roger Martaugh
The last big name concert I attended was Korn and Rob Zombie. Naturally, most of the people who are in attendance were getting high or getting drunk. And well, I love a good beer, or several beers, the idea of just being fallen down drunk, or dehydrated drunk, just doesn’t appeal to me anymore.
This concert was also the night that the incident happened between The Hick and X2, as I alluded to here, that led to he and I being estranged for almost 10 years. The God’s honest truth is that I already wasn’t having a very good time at that show to begin with; so I don’t want it to sound as if the incident that happened between The Hick and X2 completely ruined concerts for me. At the same time, it left a horrible taste in my mouth and hasn’t really motivated me to attend any more big concerts. These days, I much rather prefer the smaller, more intimate, setting of seeing a live band in a bar.
Of course, the price of the average concert ticket doesn’t help much either. With the virtual demise of hardcopy media sales, such as CDs, musicians have one more revenue stream blocked out for them. Concerts are their big Cashcow these days. As a result, the price of concert tickets has gone up significantly. Give me this, and the fact that most of my favorite musicians are getting old and have lost a step in their performances, concerts are just not that appealing to me anymore.
What is one activity that you have outgrown or lost interest in overtime?
