When my parents were my age, they had 3 college-age kids! The Old Man was retired from the police department. He was able to get his full pension at 25 years – regardless of his age – so he did. Of course, he went onto a second career, teaching, of all things. In comparison, I look at where I’m at in my life, and I just feel like I don’t have it together, nearly as well as my parents did.
Granted, my parents had my brother, sister, and I, much younger than I had kid 1. I’m the youngest between me and my three siblings, and my parents were 27 when I was born. I was 32 when I had Kid 1. Furthermore, I was 40 when I had kid 2.
And I get it: I got off to a later start because of college, and because X1 and I really weren’t ready to have kids until a few years into our marriage. The bigger issue is that I don’t still feel very secure in my career. I Wish I had more money, I wish my housing situation was different. I just don’t feel settled even though I’m 49 years old.

Then there’s a relationship situation: I was married for 11 years. This summer, my “divorced era” will eclipse the length of my marriage. I just feel like I’m starting over. To be honest, I don’t believe that I have another marriage within me. And there’s certainly no chance now that I will ever be part of a marriage of 40+ years, I also cannot imagine being with anybody for that long.
Of course, like my parents had a harder life than I did. They got married under. My dad began his career by the time he was 23. By 27, my parents had three kids under the age of five. I finally almost in conceivable today, at least, for me anyway. The truth is, my parents did most of the heavy, lifting earlier in their lives.
How am I supposed to feel as accomplished as my parents were at my age when I feel like I’m constantly doing resets in several aspects of my life?
What were your parents doing at your age?
