“It gets better.” That’s what I would tell my teenage self.
“You are going to become more confident. You’re going to graduate. You’re going to go to college. You’re going to actually find girls who like you. You’re going to find a career that you decided to dedicate your life to you. You’re going to fall in love. You’re going to have children. You’re going to make it.” Then, as I’m making my exit, just to absolutely positively, let him know that unequivocally, he is I; and I am he:
“Oh yeah, and that girl [Boss Lady] who you time your exits out of the yearbook room for, just so you get a chance to see her between classes? You’re gonna get her. It won’t be for a long time. You’re not even gonna date each other for very long, but IT is going to happen.”
At that moment, high school Rob would look at middle-age Rob like he’s completely out of his mind.
It truly is amazing the twist and turns that our lives take us through. In the present, it’s very difficult for us to conceptualize any of our hopes and dreams becoming a reality. Living in the present, it’s hard for us to conceptualize anything beyond that moment. It seems like there’s no way out of our current situation. Worse than that, it seems like our wildest hopes and dreams are absolutely impossible. But every now, and then, they come true. Not always in the exact way we hope, or how we plan, but sometimes it does happen.
