Common decency and decorum prohibit me from discussing the most delicious thing I have ever eaten. That being said, I will instead discuss the best-tasting drink I’ve ever had.
Twenty-years ago this summer, (my God, had it been THAT long?) X1 and I had moved to South Carolina. We were both offered teaching positions there and decided to go for it. We packed all our things into a moving truck, as well as our two cars (one of which went on a trailer hooked to our moving truck).
It was early August when we arrived – the absolute dogs days of summer. Anyone who ahs spent amount of time in the South during the summer knows that Southern humidity is closer to that of Southeast Asia than any other part of America. We had rode down alone. No friends or family followed us down to help with the move; so we had to move our furniture up 1 flight of stairs. I was tired, disoriented from the road and sweating profusely; thanks to the South Carolina humidity. To make matters worse, I had to report for work the next day, so leaving the moving truck packed overnight was not an option.
We had a neighbor downstairs who offered us a each a beer. They were just Bud Lights, but I can teel you with conviction that that beer was far and away, the best beverage I have ever drank in my entire life. I was tempted to have a second one, but give how dehydrated I was, it probably not a good idea.
Nevertheless my new neighbor caught me at a particularly low moment. I was exhausted, sweaty, sore and in a position where I had no choice but to “man up”. But it was one of those moments where total stranger saw that X1 and I just needed something to drink.
