The Apostate

What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?

my mother was raised Catholic. My father was Presbyterian. That being said, my siblings and I were raised in the Catholic Church because that’s how marriages go.

In spite of that, however, I’ve never been a terribly religious guy. I’ve said another post satellites I think of myself as “spiritual, but not religious”. With that in mind, I’ve never been one to attend church on a regular basis. I guess I was one of those “Christmas and Easter “Catholics.
As we got older, I realize that my mom was starting to get more involved with her church. She would attend services on Ash Wednesday and the ashes put on her forehead. Furthermore, she does not eat meat on Fridays during lent.
As time went on I Found myself more and more odd with some of the Catholic Church of social and political views. Specifically, I stood opposition to the churches positions on things like premarital, sex, abortion, LGBTQ rights. As I started to stray from the Catholic dogma, I stopped going to church. I stopped participating in things like Ash Wednesday and lent.
for what it’s worth, one and I were married at a Catholic Church. We did it mostly to appease my mom. I didn’t really care. One didn’t really care. So we just did it.

Today, I never attempted church. Well, maybe if I’m at a wedding, but that’s about it. I still celebrate Christmas, but I really couldn’t care less about Easter at this point. In fact, in the years ahead, I hope to start my own Easter Sunday tradition of attending a baseball game.

Funny, I just did a post on religion without even reading the writing prompt, lol.

FWIW, the prompt didn’t specify religious traditions. It could have been anything from Sunday car drives or family dinners to a specific vacation spot as well. 😉

Exactly. But for whatever reason, my mom’s religious beliefs are what popped into my mind.

It is a pretty aggressive word. I made a big deal of it in my horror novel because it felt like a religious version of traitor, all the venom attached.
In some communities even the distance you are talking abotu taking can seem like a betrayal. Tough having that hanging over you in any way.

Yeah, that title might have been a little dramatic. But I figured it had a little more bite to it than “the guy who doesn’t go to his mommy’s church anymore” 😝
