I’m glad that I’m feeling a lot better today writing this post than I did when I originally replied to this prompt roughly a year ago.
My school started back up earlier this week. Starting before Labor Day is a little bit awkward. Officially, my students don’t even have their actual classes yet so we’re just pulling students together with teachers and doing icebreaker activities for the first few days of school.
I’m a little bit tired. But that’s usually to be expected with getting back into the regular daily routine. It’s not like what people feel after a long weekend; I’ll be amplified. Things could be considerably worse right now. I have no complaints, and I am grateful.
The movie Star Trek IV: the voyage home opens immediately after the end of Star Trek III: the search for Spock. At this point, the famous crew of USS Enterprise is on the planet Vulcan after restoring their comrade, Mr. Spock, to life.
On Vulcan, Spock is undergoing a series of mental tests, presumably to see how much he knows after having been dead. After bombarding him with random questions, mostly of a scientific nature like you would expect from the Vulcan species on Star Trek. Finally, after a brief, the computer asks Spock “How do you feel?”
As anyone who follows the Star Trek franchise knows, Spock is the child of a human mother and a Vulcan father. Throughout the franchise, this has caused him many internal conflicts – and it often cited as a reason why teenagers of the 1960s connected with him. He struggles between embracing his more emotional, empathetic human nature against his strict adherence to logic, due to his Vulcan upbringing. So a question like “how do you feel?“ Is, for someone like Mr. Spock, baffling one.
After the Enterprise saves humanity (once again) at the conclusion of Star Trek IV, Spock is reunited with his father. As father and son are about to depart ways, Sarek asks his son if he has a message for his human mother, Spock, tells Sarek “tell her ‘I feel fine’”.
And that’s where I am right now. I feel fine.
How do you feel?
