Rob Reviews – LMCU Ballpark – Comstock Park, MI

This past Saturday, Kid 2 and I attended a West Michigan Whitecaps game at their home, LMCU Ballpark.

This was not my first time there, as I previously attended a game there with X2 back in 2016. However I must admit that I didn’t like the stadium as much as I previously remembered. I know that there are some renovations planned for this off-season. I think that, and the fact that I have attended games at other minor league stadiums in the time since has forced me to rank this park lower than I previously had. I think a lot of the issues I currently have with LMCU Ballpark are things that are going to be remedied with the off-season renovations.

For all intents and purposes, the seating area is one level. There is some premium seating and luxury suites in the area that is traditionally considered the “upper deck”. Also, a new family area is one of the new additions planned for the 2025 season. The team claims a seating capacity of nearly 9,000, but I find that very difficult to believe.

Perhaps my biggest complaint about the park was the size of the concourses. Announced attendance for the game was a little over 7,000 but I felt like the concourses were extremely crowded. Food lines moved well enough, but I felt like I was constantly weaving my way back to my seat.

I was shocked to see that the safety netting for the lower deck did not run past the dugouts. This fellow a bit of a throwback to me as MLB parks have had betting run well past the dugouts for the last few years. I had assumed that, as MiLB is going to great lengths to conform to MLB standards – that this would have changed years ago. I did read that netting will be extended as part of the 2025 renovations.

I wish I had more to say about the park itself. As it was the second-to-last home game of the season, it felt as if the team is in something of a holding pattern regarding the facility due to the upcoming renovations. In fact, if you check out the Whitecaps social media accounts, their renovations are already underway.

If I was to return to LMCU Ballpark next season and see the renovations, I would also like to make a stop to see the Traverse City Pit Spitters as well.
