Daily writing prompt
Describe a family member.

i’m going to make this post a “two for one“. When this prompt came up around this time last year, I wrote about kid one. A few weeks later, I inevitably wrote a similar post about kid 2. I will be embedding both of those posts below for posterity sake. But today, I’m going to give a little update on both of the boys:

As I’ve written about elsewhere, kid one is in his senior year of high school. This past summer, and even early into this fall, one and I have been taking him to tour the various colleges that he may attend next year. He made the decision earlier this year to leave gymnastics behind, but he is currently working two jobs in addition to balancing his schoolwork. Kid one never ceases to amaze me. He received his first college acceptance letter and his first scholarship offers a few weeks back; and I know that that is just the beginning. I don’t know if I could find words to describe how extraordinarily proud I am of him. Seeing him this first major milestone in his life has had me very reflective already this year. The best is yet to come for him.

I am constantly amazed at the changes that kid is undergoing from day-to-day, week to week. I typically see him at least once a week in person and I always find myself asking. “did he grow since the last time I saw him? I’m pretty sure he did.” Some of my biggest concerns about kid who have been allayed lately: I’m starting to see some genuine personality and character growth from him. I feel like I’m really starting to get a feel for exactly who kid 2 is. Most times he’s “the quiet one” he’ll sit in the same room as you seemingly lost in his own world, but he’s hyper aware of everything that’s going on. A few weeks back when kid was in town, this absolutely hysterical imitation of Mother. Kid 2 May at times be the quietest person in the room, seemingly the most, oblivious to everything going on around him, but he’s well aware of everything in his surroundings. He’s taking notes on EVERYTHING, and when he does open his mouth, your jaw will probably hit the floor.

The coolest part is I get to witness all of this myself. I’ve asked this question before, and I will continue to ask it: is being a parent the greatest job in the world or what?
