Rob Explores America’s 4B Movement

A few days ago, I stumbled across this term, 4B, for the first time. According to the this Wikipedia article, 4B, or the 4 no’s, started in South Korea in the late 2010s as part of a social protest movement. In a nutshell, the 4B movement comprised of heterosexual women who have decided not to date, marry, have sex, or have children with men.

Fast forward to today and this article that appeared on CNN:

American women are discussing the 4B movement in the aftermath of the 2024 Presidential election. Many American women feel let down by men – specifically because of Trump’s victory. More to the point, they don’t not feel safe or respected under a Trump administration. Since men voted for Trump, these women no longer feel safe around American men. This past spring, the “man or bear?” question went viral on social media. I even wrote about it HERE. Apparently, women in the 4B movement are doubling-down on these “bear” answer.

I remember hearing about something similar several years back here in America. Not about completely abandoning heterosexual men but I recall a movement among divorced women – single moms specifically – who were forgoing relationships in order to dedicate themselves to being a parent. Evidently X1 shared and article about this in social media some time after our divorce.

I can certainly appreciate the frustration felt by many America women after the election. In fact, I share it. I feel that the majority of Americans let the entire nation down this past Tuesday. If women don’t want to engage in relationships with men because they don’t feel safe, or if they don’t feel valued, more power to them. But I think these 4B women need to remember that there’s an awful lot of heterosexual men support equality for women; men who voted for Kamala Harris. This feels like a rather radical reaction to this week’s election.

I understand that the 4B movement is a form of social – and even cultural – protest; but it’s not really going to change anything in my opinion. The whole thing is truly a sad state of affairs, and we’re nowhere near Inauguration Day yet.
