Daily writing prompt
If you could meet a historical figure, who would it be and why?

The truth is, I’ve written so many posts similar to this one about Malcolm X., that I’ve decided to discuss another historical figure that I would like to meet. I don’t know that I can really technically call him a “historical” figure as he is alive and living today. However, Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s position as president of Ukraine, particularly during a ongoing war with Russia, has certainly cemented his place in history. As I’m writing this post on Tuesday night, today marks the 1000th day of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Zelenskyy‘s entry into politics is one of those stories that are stranger than fiction. Given that America’s 45th and 47th president is a former reality TV personality, it seems fitting that Zelenskyy himself was also a TV star on Ukrainian television.

Zelenskyy not only starred on the Ukrainian sitcom Servant of the People, he also created the series. The show was about a Ukrainian schoolteacher, who is unknowingly recorded while going on a political rant in class one day. The video goes viral, and ultimately Zelenskyy ‘s character is elected president of Ukraine. The show ran for three seasons and was followed by a feature length movie as well. Here is a great NPR article that tells the story of the Zelenskyy‘s transition from show business to politics to war.

My response to this prompt from exactly 1 year ago.

I think what amazes me most about Zelenskyy is that he has chosen to remain in Ukraine during the Russian invasion. He could’ve very easily fled the country and served as “a president in exile“. Instead, he chose to stay and defend his homeland. The actor-turned politician is now a “commander in chief of the armed forces” in the truest sense of the phrase. He is leading his nation in wartime. Sometimes real-life is actually stranger than fiction.

Another thing that blows my mind about Zelenskyy. is his age. He is 46, or four years younger than I am. When I hear things like that, it makes me wonder “what the hell did I do with my life“ I’m not saying I want to exchange places with him, but just to see him go from television star to the president of his country is pretty mind-boggling. That’s not even taking his age into the equation.

In case I haven’t made it clear already, I support Ukraine in this attack on their sovereignty. I’m not a religious man, but I how and pray that they are able to win this war.
