I’ve talked about this to a few times over the last year or so, but the one thing I would like people to be able to say about me – be it my work colleagues, my children, my students, friends, lovers, or strangers – is that I was strong enough to be gentle.
I came upon this idea while I was watching a YouTube video in which voice actor Peter Cullen, who voiced Optimus Prime on The Transformers, talked about his inspiration for the voice. The credit to his older brother Larry, a marine veteran, told Peter “be strong enough to be gentle“. . There are many who speculate that Larry adopted this philosophy during his time in theUnited Armed forces.
One of them talked about in my life is being able to find balance that’s me the patient and standing up for myself. Often times I put up with too much, from my students, from strangers, from people in general. And other times, however, I tend to have a very short scene. I’ll let small things sit in the office. As a result, I’m constantly trying to find a good sense of balance to my life. I’m still trying to find that point where I am “strong enough to be gentle“ if you will.
Sometimes I’m amazed that even after 40 years, Optimus prime, “a hero truck“ as Peter: wants to describe him, he continues to be a role model in my life. When it’s all done, I hope that people are able to look at me and to say “Rob was strong enough to be gentle”.
