one year ago, I wrote about how being a father makes me happiest of all. I’ve embedded that response below. My current response continues after the embed.
I guess it’s only fitting that this pep on Friday night.
Tonight, I picked up Kid 1 and Kid 2 for Christmas. I have talked briefly about the fact that kid 1 is going through some teenage stuff right now, specifically stuff of the girl kind. I have talked more to X1 about everything going on in the last four weeks than we’ve probably talked in the last 4 YEARS.
Even Phred noticed it tonight. We were home and talking in the living room for maybe. 10 minutes. When he got up to use the bathroom, Phred said “he’s changed”.
And he has. Drastically, in a matter of 3 months.
This isn’t like he’s been away college for the last 3 months – grew out his hair and starting smoking pot. There’s one new element that has been introduced into his life in the last 3 months. His girlfriend.
The plan, since Thanksgiving, has been to get him up here to Michigan and just have a real “man-to-man” conversation. He needs it badly. This isn’t him. He doesn’t even hang out with his friends anymore. He spends all his time with his girlfriend.
He was practically bragging to Phred about how many days of school he missed each year. “I have an out” he said. Apparently he gets notes from his pediatrician like they’re lollipops. I tried to tell him:
You’re not always going to have a way out of everything. Trying to do everything at the last minute will one day kick you in the ass
Rob: You’re not always going to have a way out of everything. Trying to do everything at the last minute will one day kick you in the ass
Kid 1: As long as it works, I’m going to keep doing it. Maybe I need a good ass kicking.
Seriously, who is this person, and what has he done with Kid 1? I guess with everything going so smoothly for him up until now, it’s spoiled me in a way. I hardly eve recognize him.
These next 7 days should be most interesting.
