I feel like I’ve talked about this topic ad nauseam. But the truth is that my dad, AKA The Old Man is, was, always has been and always will be the biggest influence on my life.
He wasn’t perfect, but he always made the most of what he had, what he was given and what he earned.
Maybe it’s not a coincidence that I get this topic on Christmas Eve once again. Both Kid 1 and Kid 2 are with me this week and I’ve been making the most of this a Christmas week with them. My dad did everything he possibly could my could for us, his family – and I still think we’d are reaping the benefits of his life’s work. I find myself saying and doing so many things that he did with us during the holiday season.
When I die, I want to go out like he did. I want it to be quick. I want to burn out like a star foot nova. And is difficult as this next part may be, I want to toe up all of the loose ends in my life before I go. I want to leave something behind for my boys. It’s time to get to work on that.
When I wrote on this topic last year, I title the post “it’s in the DNA”. And it is. We pick up so much from our parents that we don’t even realize – their mannerisms, the inflection of their voice then of course there’s the more obvious stuff like hair color, medical history and so forth.
As I mentioned, I wrote on this same prompt last year as well. I’m embedding that response below for your reading pleasure.
