The mission remains the same

Daily writing prompt
What is your mission?

I have to be honest, I really wanted to find something new to add to “my mission” as the prompt came up again today, but i think my response from last year was pretty thorough for the most part. I fact, there’s only one thing I can think of adding to last year’s “mission”:

Be the best parent I can

In the last 12 months, I’ve been making efforts to be more involved in the everyday lives of Kid 1 and Kid 2. Naturally, it’s a lot easier with Kid 1, as he lives “only” one hour away from me; compared to Kid 2’s 13-hour commute.

I’ve been doing more to get Kid 1 up to Michigan as much as I can. I think it’s especially as he’s about to turn 18 and start college this fall. He came up here to visit the University of Michigan last September, an experience I blogged about HERE.

This past December, all the stars lined up and i had both Kid 1 and Kid 2 in town for Christmas. I tried to make a point of getting as many holiday-related activities in with the boys as I could that week.

I’m sore I wrote about it already, but I also had the “man-to-man” conversation with Kid 1 that we both desperately needed. I think it went well. I let him know that i was going to trust him. I only hope that it helped smooth things over between he and X1

That’s the rub about having more than one kid. As Dave Gahan sang in “People Are People”: different people have different needs. My relationships with both boys is changing a they get older. But kid 1 and Kid 2 have always had different things they needed from me, and that’s okay.
