2 years in Paris

God bless WordPress for coming up with 365 different “daily prompts“. While writing that many prompts is an impressive feat in and of itself, it becomes an issue when a blogger posts consistently every day for well over a year. Inevitably, the same old prompts come back up again. Sometimes I can come up with something new to say about them. Sometimes I end up just reposting my old response.

But today, I decided to do something different. At the suggestion of one of our fellow WordPress bloggers, I decided to pull a prompt from this website.

But before I get into my answer to this new prompt, I am embedding my response to today’s WordPress prompt from last year, for those who are curious…

If you could live in any city for two years, where would you choose to live?

This is an easy answer. For me it’s Paris. I haven’t been to Paris in over 30 years, but for my money, Paris is the greatest city on earth.

I’ve written a lot about the trip that I made to France during the summer of my sophomore year in high school. I’ve said before, and I’ll say it again, to this day it is still one of the greatest things I’ve ever done in my entire life.

The thing that always stood out to me about France and a major difference between French and American culture is the fact that people in France seemed a lot more relaxed. Even being there for just two weeks, I got the sense that people attitude was like “if I don’t get it done today, I’ll just do it tomorrow“. On the other hand, here in America, we are always told “bigger, better, faster, more. We need it done 10 minutes ago”

Paris cannot be beat for its architecture, its history, its art, and its overall culture. I could just get completely engrossed in the city of Paris and probably not absorb everything that wanted to take in in a span of two years. To this day, I still feel a sense of kinship with France, even though I haven’t studied French in over 20 years; let alone been to France in 30 years

Beautiful city, only a pity that there is no longer the atmosphere as 30 years ago, it has changed too much, I am sorry mate.

There’s something about the first trip abroad that is special. Eyes open to see an entirely new world. I think it was even more impactful for us pre-internet people because we didn’t even have a glimpse of what it would be like before we boarded the plane. Paris is a great choice.

One of the things I remember thinking before I went to France was when I would look at pictures of France in a textbook. I thought that it looked like it was 1953 there still.

And then when you get there, and you see that the street signs are different, there are much older buildings, and the cars are still different for the most part.

I think that everybody can benefit from traveling abroad, particularly Americans.
