Rob’s Top 5 Star Trek: Lower Decks Episodes

As I felt like I didn’t really do Stat Trek: Lower Decks justice in my review from a few days ago, I decide to list my top 5 favorite episodes from the series. I wanted to name 10, but at 50 episodes, that would’ve been 20% of the entire series.

Here they are, in no particular order…

“I, Excretus” season 2, episode 8

From the Paramount+ synopsis: “A consultant arrives in the USS Cerritos to run drills that require the lower deckers and bridge crew to swap duties”

The crew’s holodeck drills are callbacks to various adventures throughout the Star Trek franchise

“Hear All, Trust Nothing ” season 3, episode 6

“The Cerritos crew unexpectedly spends a day on Deep Soace Nine”

It didn’t really matter what the story was, the fan service of catching up with DS9, Colonel Kira, and Quark drove this episode!

“Trusted Sources” season 3, episode 9

“A visiting reporter in the Cerritos puts Captain Freemen on edge”

This episode is up to its name, as the reputation of the Cerrillos is defended by the unlikeliest of people.

“Grounded” season 3, episode 1

“Mariner enlists her friends on a rogue mission to exonerate her mother as Captain Freeman faces military tribunal for the destruction of Pakled Planer”

We get to see the lower deckers on Earth, out of uniform and on a heist! The fact that James Cromwell appears as the voice of the holographic Zefram Cochrane, as well as the First Contact score by Jerry Goldsmith makes the Lower Decker’s trip to Bozeman perfect!

“Reflections” season 5, episode 5

“Mariner and Boimler work the Starfleet recruitment booth at an alien job fair. Rutherford challenges himself.

The recruitment booth sub plot featured a lot of of Star Trek callbacks. However, for me, the real heart of episode is Rutherford’s backstory. The payoff would come later on, but that falls kind of flat.

Honorable mention:
“Those Old Scientists”
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 7

“An accident while investigating a time portal sends Ensign Brad Boimler from the twenty-fourth century, and Captain Pike and his crew must get him back where he belongs before he can somehow alter the timeline.”

Seeing Boimler and Mariner in live-action was the real treat; but seeing both the enterprise crew and the SNW opening credits in animated form was the cherry on top!
