If you’ve read my blog at all over the last few years, you’re probably aware of the fact that I am a big fan of the Star Trek franchise. By 1993, Star Trek: The Next Generation was already a hit, so Paramount greenlit a spinoff. DS nine would become everything that TNG was not: it was initially billed as darker, having been set on an alien space station. Later in the series, we would see the Dominion War unfold, in a first for Star Trek. And unlike TOS or TNG, DS9 would be a much more serialized program. It would fit in very well in today’s “Netflix style binge watching” approach to viewing that modern audiences are used to.
Given the level of storytelling that was presented on DS9, it’s difficult to narrow this list down to 10 best episodes; but here are mine, in no particular order. Let the debating begin…
“The Visitor”
Season 4, episode 2. An accident leaves Sisko trapped in subspace and Jake is desperate to bring him home.
This episode hits me on a few different levels; having seen it in its first run as a young man and watching it now in reruns as a father myself.
“In the Pale Moonlight”
Season 6, Episode 19. Sisko & Garak work to bring the Romulans into the Dominion War.
This may very well be the best Star Trek episode ever.
“Trials and Tribble-ations”
Season 5, Episode 6. The crew is sent back to the 23rd Century. This episode was Deep Space Nine’s celebration of Star Trek’s 30th anniversary.
“The Way of the Warrior”
Season 4, Episode 1. When the Klingons return to their warrior ways, Sisko calls in Starfleet’s lone Klingon officer.
This episode serves as an unofficial “second pilot” for the series; introducing a new main character in “resetting the table“.
“The Siege of AR-558”
season 7, Episode 8. Sisko and his crew take part in a standoff with the Jem Hadar over a key outpost. This episode explores the grim realities of war.
“Past Tense” parts I & II
Season 3, episodes 11 & 12 Sisko, Bashir and Dax are transported to 2024 at a key point in Earth’s history.
“Favor the Bold” & “Sacrifice of Angels”
Season 6, Episodes 5 & 6. Sisko puts together a plan to retake Deep Space Nine from the Dominion in this two-part conclusion to the first story arc of season 6.
“The Ship”
Season 5, Episode 2. Sisko and his crew recover a Jem Hadar warship, but the Dominion wants it – something inside of it – back.
I know that there are A LOT of episodes that could’ve made this list. For the matter, limiting myself to only 10. Best episodes probably doesn’t do Deep Space 9 justice. In many ways, I see DS9 as the Rodney Dangerfield of the Star Trek franchise: it doesn’t get no respect.
