As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
What has been a positive outcome of the pandemic?
We are approaching the five year anniversary of the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States. Well, I’m sure that a lot of other bloggers have beat this topic into the ground, I’m still surprised to say that I wrote almost nothing during the entire 2020 calendar year. So now is as good. Every time is only to look back on that incredibly weird time in human history.
The embracing of digital communication
As a teacher, virtual classes, FaceTime calls, zoom calls all became an essential part of my job. It’s funny because I knew that my school district had Microsoft teams download it on our staff computers; and we never use them, until the lockdowns. Although virtual instruction sucked for the majority of students, I personally found some of the quieter, less social students actually took to virtual schooling like fish to water. I’m not going to say that virtual schooling is for everybody, but it is a great option for some students who prefer that form of instruction
Likewise, I have several friends who are attorneys, and have said that virtual court appearances were an absolute Godsend. Well, most court cases have returned to the traditional courtroom setting, I do know that there are a few judges, depending on the type of case, who still hold court virtually. lLawyers love it for the same reason that teachers probably did: you don’t need to spend time getting dressed and commuting. I know that I loved being able to teach in my pajamas.
Exposing the utter uselessness of celebrities
I’ve said it before many times and I will say it again: here in America, we worship our celebrities and our entertainers. We care what they wear, how they look, and how they think. But one of the great things that came out of the pandemic was seeing how, when things really get tough, our celebrities, are entertainers, or athletes, and our influencers are completely and utterly useless.
We already knew pre–pandemic that streaming media was the way of the future. It due to the pandemic, we saw movies go from theaters to streaming platform faster than ever before. In fact t, we even saw some movie skip theatrical runs altogether and go straight to streaming. I believe that had the lockdown lasted mi h longer, we would have seen permanent shift in the way we received our entertainment. There are still some who think that the movie theater industry has never full recovered from the pandemic.
A new-found appreciation for essential workers
Up until the lockdowns, we tended to think of first responders as doctors, EMTs, police officers, and firefighters. Because of the pandemic, I think we are able to induct retail workers and even teachers into that elite essential worker category.
Offices closed down. TV and movie studio sets were empty. But it was business as usual for EMTs, police officers, firefighters and doctors. Grocery store employees became essential workers, as did teachers.
As a teacher myself, I have to say that I loved the new founder spot, however, brief it was, that people had for educators. I always laughed when I would hear parents talking about “helping their kids with their virtual classes“ as if they somehow understood what it meant to be a teacher. Granted, they got a cross-section of what it must be like. But I digress.
The Covid 19 pandemic, and its ensuing lockdowns, were a truly depressing time. I, for one, hope to never experience anything like that again in my lifetime. But bright spots emerge from the worst of times. I think I’ve done a decent job of did if a few of those positives.
