As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
What is a struggle meal you actually like?
Many years ago, back when I was still in college… Back when X1 and I were dating – she introduced me to the original sloppy Joe. A few years back, I took to referred to these as “depression, sloppy Joe’s” but for the most part, the actual recipe call them original sloppy Joe’s.
It is a simple recipe and relatively cheap: 1 pound of ground meat, one can of Campbell’s tomato soup, hamburger buns.
- Brown meat
- Drain fat / grease
- Mix 1 can of Campbell’s soup into meat
- Serve on hamburger buns
I was never really a sloppy Joe eater before I met X1 . As it is, I really can’t stand Manwhich sloppy Joe mix today. Maybe that’s, in some part, because this depression or a sloppy Joe was my introduction to this type of sandwich.
I hadn’t had them for a very long time; probably going back to my divorce. But a few weeks back, after visiting mother and her assisted living center in the evenings for months on end, I get sick of eating fast food. I wanted to actually fix something myself at home. So I decided to pull together some depression era sloppy Joe. They were as good as I remember; hardly a culinary masterpiece, but effective, cheap and probably still more healthy than eating fast food. Given the way prices continue to climb, these are certainly cheaper than eating a fast food hamburger. I’m sure I’ll be having them again sooner rather than later.
