As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
If you had an extra 2 hours daily, how would you spend it?
Before I get into today’s prompt, I think it’s important to mention that, through complete coincidence, tomorrow morning also happens to be the beginning of daylight savings here in America – a time that is known “spring forward“ where we set our clocks ahead one hour. We lose an hour sleep at night initially, but we gain an hour of sunlight every day. I guess, in a manner of speaking, this is one of the rare times each year where we truly get to manipulate time .
On the television show, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the titular space station is an orbit near the planet Bajor. According to the series, Bajor has a 26 hour day. For that reason, whenever I think of having two additional hours added to the day, I can’t help but think about deep space nine.
I’d like to say that I’d be really responsible with two extra hours in a day. Then I do something sensible like make sure I work out, or that I’m reading, or even spending time with my kids.
The super lazy part of me likes to think that I would spend those additional two hours sleeping or at least resting.
But the truth is, I would probably spend those two extra hours on the day sitting around, snacking too much, watching TV, or playing on my phone.
I wonder sometimes what humans would be like if we simply had two additional hours added to our day. I also feel like the 24 hour day is the humans what the 90 foot distance between bases is to baseball. If our days were a little bit shorter, I think we would all be much more grateful for our time. If we had two more hours in a day, I think that we would probably take it for granted, or end up sleeping even later than we do.
As much as I like the idea of a 26 hour day in theory, I just don’t think it would be terribly feasible. I mean, could you imagine us having clocks that went to 13?
