Now, back to my usual spiel…
As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
If you could write a children’s book, what lesson would you like to teach?
I took a children’s literature class in college. Although I teach middle in high school, I thought it would be interesting to have just a broader understanding of this genre of books that I had, until then, blown off as kid stuff.
There is a lot more going on in children’s literature than most of us realize. Very deliberate choices are made with the illustrations: the colors that are used, the way characters are depicted, even the direction characters are moving across from one side of the page to the other. Besides, it’s always kind of funny walking into your campus bookstore, and asking for a copy of Where The Wild Things Are for your coursework
I have a few friends, or at least friends of friends, who have tried their hand at writing children’s literature some of them have been published; which I guess isn’t really saying a lot given all the small publishers and startups that we have today.
I don’t know if I could myself to just one lesson that I would want to teach. But if I had to start with one, the first lesson, I would probably want to teach in a children’s book is for children to stand up for themselves, to speak their minds and always speak the truth.
As I’ve said for years, bullshit is what makes the world go round. There is a big difference between telling a lie and simply bullshitting. But we all do both every single day. Big lies, little lies, and total bullshit. I think that teaching children to be truthful, albeit tactfully would be one of the most important things I can teach a young person.
It’s too easy to lie. It’s too easy to fall into that trap of deception. And I think that if people were more direct and more outright with what they wanted, the world would probably be a much better place
