Make those memories!

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

What do you wish you started doing sooner?

This is something I talk a lot about. But one thing that I wish I had started doing sooner is doing things strictly for my own pleasure.

Too often in life, we get bogged down and our every day minutiae: work, school, family, responsibilities. I know that I’m guilty of wanting to do things and saying “well, I’ll get to it someday“ and then waking up now day to realize that I never did it. I remember when I moved from Michigan to South Carolina 19 years ago (my God, has it been that long? ). I remember suddenly thinking of myself “geez, I’ve never been to Mackinac Island. I’ve never been to sleeping bear dunes. I’ve never done any of this corny local stuff here in Michigan.” And not that those are necessarily things that I really want to do, but there are things that I’ve always talked about doing, and I’ve always said that I would simply get around to one day.

That’s why it makes such a big deal about visiting baseball stadiums in other cities. That’s something that I want to do. It may sound corny. It may not be the coolest thing in the world the most people. But it’s something that I want to do. Right now, when I travel, I try to make a point of going during baseball season and seeing games and other cities.

With that said, I wish I started doing this years ago. I tried making a trip to Wrigley Field in Chicago back when I was in college; but because of some petty drama involving the people I was going with, I ended up never going. I just made it to Wrigley Field this year for the first time.

We tend to think that we have all the time in the world. How many times have you said yourself “I’ll do that someday end”? The truth is, we don’t have all the time in the world. I’m not trying to turn this into some weighty philosophical issue but it really is important to do things while you have the chance.

So go ahead. Do it. Make someday today. It’s nice to save money and build a better life for yourself, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet, pull the trigger, and just do things that you want to do.

And they could be things for you. For your own pleasure. For your own entertainment. With your loved ones – your family, your kids. You’re not going to just stumble into some trip to Disney World. As my title says, you have to make these memories for yourself.
