I want to be so angry and so outraged about yesterday’s school shooting in Minneapolis, but I can’t. To be honest with you, right now I just feel like I’ve had all the anger and rage just completely stomped out of me.
It’s hard to be angry about something when you know it’s going to happen sooner or later. The gun epidemic in the United States is absolutely out of control. And there’s not one politician in Washington of any political ideology who wants to do a damn thing about it.
And once again, it’s not a drag queen who did this. It was not somebody who-uses-pronouns-other-than-the-ones-society-assigned-them-at-birth who did this. And it damn sure wasn’t an illegal immigrant. It was…say it with me if you know where I’m going … just another angry white boy.
We are damned
Nothing changed after the bell tower at the university of Texas. Nothing changed after Columbine. And when nothing changed after Sandy Hook – an elementary school where children as young as five were shot and killed, I knew that the United States was damned as a society.
I don’t ever wanna hear about “thoughts and prayers” again. This is a matter of define intervention. Praying isn’t going to end this crisis. God isn’t coming to save us. This is a problem with the people of this country need to solve ourselves. These kids were literally in a mass in their Catholic school when this happened.
I love my sons more than anything in the world, but at the same time, there are days is when I wish that they didn’t have to grow up in this country at this particular moment in our history. I like to think that there’s better days ahead for this country. As a history student, I know all of those too will eventually pass. But I just hate having to live through it right now.
