I just caught wind of Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension last night while I was at the Tiger game with Veronica. To be honest, I’m really torn on the subject. I’m two very opposing minds here.
The freedom of speech should be absolute
In my opinion, the first amendment to the constitution of the United States, the amendment a guarantee is a free of speech, is the most important.
He said it on company time
I sat down to write this today and on an emotional level, I’m outraged at the “indefinite suspension “of Jimmy Kimmel from his late night talkshow on ABC, I understand the decision to suspend Kimmel.
I don’t agree with the decision at all; and yet this is a case where two wrongs don’t make a right. The fact is, Jimmy Kimmel said what he said on company time. He is employed by ABC, or the Sinclair media group, depending on who you’re talking to. If they don’t like what he said on their late night, talk show, they can fire him. It’s a simple as that.
Two wrongs never make a right
My bigger problem lay in the fact that I feel media outlets in the United States are cow towing to the Trump regime . They’re bending over backwards to appease him. This is just another example, given CBS/Paramount’s decision to end The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Some people might tell you that both situations are cost-cutting measure. And they could very well be. I think I heard that Jimmy Kimmel is making $15 million to season right now. While, I enjoyed watching him on Win Ben Stein’s Money and the all-too brief The Man Show, I’ve never really been a fan of his work on his late night show. I have seen a couple of skits from his post Super Bowl episodes, and they were usually pretty good. But I don’t know if it’s enough to warn paying him $15 million a year.
I thought that Colbert winning the best late night talk show Emmy last week was something of an active defiance by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Tbis past season, The Late Show has gotten its best ratings since Colbert took over. And now the show has an Emmy win under her belt.
Of course, Donald Trump is spinning the narrative that both Colbert and Kimmel are “no talent losers“ or whatever pedantic five-year-old insult he wants to put on his social media platforms. Their salaries, their ratings and their award recognition both say otherwise.
Maybe I’m looking at this the wrong way. Earlier I use the phrase “two wrongs don’t make a right“ in my opinion, I have no problem with what Kim said in regards to Charlie Kirk and the way that the Republican Party is spinning his assassination. He didn’t say anything Untrue and he didn’t say anything degrading to Kirk.
I sincerely hope that we will see Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and maybe some other Hollywood comedians embark on some kind of new entertainment adventure. Maybe a podcast. Maybe they can strike a deal with one of the streaming services.
Having said all this, even if I don’t disagree with the decision to fire, Jimmy Kimmel, I am gravely concerned for the nature of free speech in my country today. Jimmy Kimmel was fired literally for saying something that Donald Trump didn’t like.
Selective Outrage
It was just last week that Brian Kilmeade, a co-host on fox and friends suggested that homeless people should be subjected to “involuntary executions“ Where was the outrage at that?
Maybe the problem is the Democrats, the liberals, the progressive, whatever you want to call them. Maybe they’re not making enough noise about it still, I find it funny that the political party that was deeply criticizing “cancel culture“ when about having Jimmy Kimmel Canceled from ABC. Make no mistake about it. Disney cow town to Donald Trump‘s threats of revoking the broadcasting license of ABC.
I know that “legacy media“ isn’t quite dead yet in this country. But I think we’re definitely seeing the beginning of the end. What’s going to happen going forward? What’s going to be left in the week of the annihilation of the legacy media? I think just like cable TV ratings, we’re going to see the news media splinter often into 1 million tiny little pieces. Everybody’s going to ultimately choose where they wanna get their news content from.
There’s still a lot that is waiting to “come out in the wash” in the story. I think the Sinclair media group who produces the Jimmy Kimmel show, and more specifically, the Sinclair family themselves, probably have a lot more to deal with Kimmel’s firing and then the higher up at Disney. But of course, it could also be that I’m trying to give Disney the benefit of the doubt. We’ll see what transpires over the next few days.
