Endless Dusk

With all due respect to H.P. Lovecraft

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

Would you rather have a longer morning, afternoon, or evening?

Back in March, I wrote about the TV series. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Part of the show’s backstory is that the planet Bajor has a 26 hour day. Conventional wisdom tells us that a 26 hour day would probably just include a 13 AM and a 13 PM. Sorry, Mr. Orwell. But what if we actually had a longer day? It wouldn’t even necessarily have to be a longer day; rather, just a rearrangement of the time in our current 24 hour day. What if, as the prompt suggests, we could actually choose which part of the day would be longer?

An even earlier bird

If I had longer mornings, I would probably start going to the gym before work. Right now, doing that would require me to wake up at 5 AM, at the latest. As it is, I already wake up at 6 just to get ready for work every weekday, so I would probably have to get up at 4:30 every morning. justto get an ample workout in.

So for this, and only this one reason, longer mornings would be more beneficial for me. Beyond that, I don’t see much benefit from having a longer mornings. More than that, I have no interest in a longer morning.

The End of 9-5 work days

Were we to have a longer afternoon, I think we Americans would completely abandon the traditional 9–5 workday. There have been studies that suggested that the ideal time for young people to start their school day would be 2 PM, as that’s when their brains are functioning at their daily peak.

Also, I think that longer afternoons would make lunch the most important meal that anyone eats during the day. Advice, it would probably become the “traditional family hour; taking the place of the old school, family dinners.

For a while, I actually thought the United States was working towards eliminating, or at least pairing back the traditional 9–5 workday. There was a time where it seemed like more and more businesses decided to stay open 24 hours. That is, of course, before Covid.

Night Evening time is the right time.

Like most people, I think I would prefer longer evenings. At this point, I personally am done working for the day. As a result, evenings, kind of become my unofficial “downtime“ this is usually the time that I find out what’s going on in the world, check in on the tiger game thank you basically whatever I feel like doing for the remainder of the day

For me, currently, I’m also visiting Mother around the dinner hour at her assisted living center. To be honest, that occupies a major portion of my evening time. Having even longer evenings would give me more time to do things for myself and maybe even have more of a social life.
