Shrekking

Maybe I’m late to the party. Maybe this has been a thing for a while, but yesterday I saw an Instagram post about “Shrekking”. This is the practice is dating someone who isn’t very attractive (think of The Reacher and The Settler but with ulterior motives) in the hopes that they will treat you better than a more attractive person would. The term is a callback to the Shrek movie franchise

This Vice article was in accredited detail to explain the concept of Shrekking, and what it really means to be Shrekked.

I suppose this is a good time to point out that at the end of the original Shrek movie, Fiona, whom we all thought to be a beautiful, human princess is revealed to be an ogre herself. Sorry about the 24 year old spoiler…

Is this a real thing? My God, if it is, what is the point? Women would actually go with less attractive men because they think they would treat them better than more attractive men?

Seriously, this is worse than seeking out validation through social media.
