As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
If your life was a TV show, what would this episode be titled?
The Current Episode: “Holiday Hoopla”
If you asked me that question right now, I would probably say “Holiday Hoopla” is what I’d call the current episode of a TV show based on my life.
I say that because, as corny as it may sound, I’m definitely getting caught up in the Christmas spirit. This past Saturday night, Veronica and I went to the annual holiday events at Greenfield Village. We took Kid 2 (Spicoli) with us. It was ridiculously cold, as we knew it would be, but we were prepared. We dressed warmly and only got very cold at the very end of the night while waiting for a shuttle to take us back to the parking lot. And in our defense, I think that was only because the temperature dropped significantly during the last hour we were there.
I Still Got Him (The Santa Question)
I’ve been a little worried about Christmas as it pertains to Kid 2 this year and going forward. He’s 10, and I pretty much knew the truth about Santa Claus by that age. Kid 2 seems like he still believes. One of the annual events they have Greenfield Village is Santa Claus set up on the second-floor balcony of one of the early American history houses. Just across the street, they have a table where employees are taking names to be read by Santa as being on the “Good List.” They announced Kid 2’s name a lot faster than I expected, but I was able to catch the look on his face as he heard his name. His eyes lit up and his jaw dropped! I still got him, I realized. He still believes.
And there’s something about being in that environment: it’s cold out. There is snow on the ground. There are horse-drawn carriages and model T’s driving around the grounds. There are little fire pits going at various points around the grounds, almost looking like something out of a Charles Dickens story. All of this against the backdrop of the early American history ambiance of the museum. It sounds a little cheesy to say, but I felt like I was walking inside a Christmas card or a Hallmark movie.
My Favorite Role: Being Santa Claus
Kid 1 will be coming over for the holidays as well. He’ll be coming in a couple of days before Christmas, which sucks, but at least I’ll be able to see him. I’ll have both of them for the week of New Year’s, or as I like to call it, “Christmas Part Two.” The Christmas tree is up. The lights have been on the outside of the house for a few weeks already. I love being a dad at Christmas time. More than that, I love being Santa Claus. I love picking out presents and wrapping them. I love making the reindeer food. I love filling the stockings. And I really love setting up the Elf on the Shelf.
We’re nine days out from the big day, and I couldn’t be more excited. No, I won’t have either of the boys with me on the 25th, but it really doesn’t matter. Christmas isn’t about the date on the calendar. It’s about the entire holiday season. I know that sounds corny, but ’tis the season. If I can’t be corny at the holidays, when can I?
So yeah, “Holiday Hoopla” would be the name of today’s episode of my life. It wouldn’t be the Christmas episode, but it would be the one leading up to the holiday.
The Week’s Lineup
Tomorrow night, Veronica and I are going to see Miracle on 34th Street: The Musical. This is the one thing she asked for this Christmas. She’s made it clear to me that she’s very excited about going.
