A sharp, close-up photograph of a basketball resting on a gleaming hardwood court floor. The scene is illuminated by focused arena lighting, and subtle, integrated floor decals show key brackets from St. John's and Iowa, symbolizing a return to game intensity and bracket recovery for Day 4 of the 2026 tournament.

Day 2 of the Round of 32 meant that the final Sweet 16 teams were determined Sunday. While Saturday was a struggle, Sunday felt like finding my rhythm again. As usual, here is how my picks fared, framed by the intensity of the games as the field narrows down…

Sunday Misfires & Random Thoughts

Congratulations to St. John’s for making their first Sweet 16 appearance since 1997! Somehow, I actually had them advancing in my bracket, and they delivered with a gritty 67–65 win over Kansas. It was a back-and-forth battle, but the Red Storm held on to extend their winning streak to seven games

I’ve got literally nothing for Iowa State defeating Kentucky, as my bracket had neither team advancing to the round of 32

Seeing number 6 seed Tennessee defeat number three seed Iowa 79–72 was something of an upset that added to the bleeding on my bracket

Watching the Juggernauts

The massive story of the day: Ninth-seeded Iowa stunned the #1 seed (and reigning champ) Florida by a single point, 73–72. I knew Iowa had a solid squad, but taking down a #1 seed is the definition of “March Madness.” Iowa’s Alvaro Folgueiras hit a massive three-pointer with just 4.5 seconds left to seal the deal. If you had the Hawkeyes in the Sweet 16, you’re officially a bracket genius.

Meanwhile, #1 seed Arizona did exactly what Arizona does. They took care of business against #9 seed Utah State, winning 78–66. While Utah State kept it close and even cut the lead to four late in the second half, the Wildcats steadied themselves to pull away.

The Final Tally

My bracket very much better on Sunday than I did on Saturday, having gone 5-3 this time.

If you’ve been following these posts for the last couple of days, you probably know the key to my bracket, but here goes again anyway:

• Highlighted schools = my picks

• X = games I got wrong

• Check marks = games I got right

Looking Ahead: The Nitty Gritty

If I’m being honest, I’m a little frazzled. The opening weekend of March Madness is a marathon, and between the 1-point heart-stoppers and the bracket-busting upsets, I’m ready for things to settle into a rhythm.

Fortunately, the tournament gives us all a chance to catch our breath. We’ve reached the “nitty gritty” of the Sweet 16, and the schedule finally slows down. We’ve got a few days to reset before the action picks back up on Thursday, March 26.

I’m looking forward to the more deliberate pace of the regional semifinals. No more wall-to-wall chaos—just high-stakes basketball with everything on the line. I’ll be back later this week to see if my bracket can survive the next round.
