The 25th Hour: What if the World Just Stopped?

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

What would you do if time stopped for 1 day, for everyone but you?

time stopped for everyone but me for just 24 hours, I’d immediately try to take advantage of the silence to get caught up. I’ve always liked the idea of getting a jump on the rest of the world—a trait that makes me a “reluctant early bird,” largely thanks to my years as a teacher.

The “Time Stone” To-Do List

With spring break next week, my mind is already racing through a “to-do list”: fixing the mailbox, replacing the washer and dryer, and finally tackling the garage. Realistically, I couldn’t finish it all in a day, but the thought of 24 hours of absolute stillness to make a dent in those chores is incredibly tempting. It’s that “Time Stone” perspective—having the power to pause the chaos just long enough to feel like I’m finally ahead.

930 Days and the 5 AM Spike

But if I really had a “25th hour” to play with, I might use a few of those frozen moments to revisit the beginning of this 930+ day journey. I’d go back to the moment I decided to start scheduling these 5 AM posts. I remember seeing my traffic spike and feeling the fuel of those first few comments and followers. Back then, looking at bloggers who were north of 1,000 days, I thought, “That would be cool, but that will never be me.” Yet, here I am, closing in on that exact milestone.

Dropping the Armor

The real appeal of a world standing still, however, isn’t just the productivity—it’s the total absence of social expectations. It’s the ultimate chance to take off the “teacher armor.”

In my daily life, that armor is built of dress shirts and khakis. It’s a functional uniform, but it’s not me. When I’m off the clock, I want to be comfortable. I think back to my dad at 51, and I realized I don’t dress anything like he did. I’m still reaching for the t-shirts and jeans I loved in my 20s and 30s. Lately, as nighttime has become my primary “wind down” territory, I’ve found myself leaning back into the pure comfort of sweatpants.

The Silence of the 25th Hour

It’s a funny transition; I’ve even run into one of my students while visiting my mom in assisted living. There I am in my “civilian” gear—sweatpants, a t-shirt, and probably messy hair—and he still addresses me as “Mr. [Last Name].” In that moment, he’s working and I’ve completely shed my “game face.” I’m just a guy visiting his mom.

Having a full “25th hour” where the world stops would be the ultimate version of that freedom. No “game face” required—just a day to be a person, make a dent in the basement, and finally, get a decent, uninterrupted night’s sleep.

Today’s post is inspired by the WordPress Daily Prompt. While I’ve taken the topic in my own direction for the Road to 1,000 Days, you can find more responses to today’s prompt HERE.
