What one-sentence comment would you leave on your very first blog post for your past self to find?
As I draw closer to my 1,000th consecutive day of blogging, I can’t help but think back to where I was when this streak began—and even further back to when I first started this blog 14 years ago.
In July 2012, I was just 30 days removed from packing my things and leaving South Carolina. At the time, I thought it would only be a short break. I knew my marriage was over and a divorce was inevitable, but I truly believed I would eventually return to South Carolina to build a life there. I was unemployed, living back in my parents’ house, and just beginning the process of getting back into a regular walking routine and hitting the gym.
If I could travel back from March 25, 2026, and leave a single comment for 2012 Rob on that very first entry, it would be this:
Rob, you’re not going to believe the things that will unfold in your life over the next 14 years. In less than a year, you’ll enter another long-term relationship, thinking it’s your last chance at something permanent. That relationship has a finite shelf life, but not before you’re lucky enough to bring another son into this world.
When that relationship ends, instead of it destroying you like the separation from your oldest son nearly did, it’s going to harden you. You’ll be galvanized and battle-tested; you’ll know for a certainty that you can survive. Rather than feeling desperate to find a new partner as your biological clock winds down, you’re going to find peace in solitude. You’ll enjoy getting to know yourself and focusing solely on your sons and your own growth.
I tell you this because you’ll spend years thinking a relationship determines your overall happiness. I swear to you, you’ll find that you can be happy on your own. Relationships aren’t meant to define your life; they’re meant to enhance it. Even if we never find “the one,” I know we’re going to be okay. We already are.
Maybe telling 2012 Rob too much about his future would screw up the space-time continuum like Doc Brown warned in Back to the Future. Still, it would have been nice to know what was coming—and to know that I was going to get through it all.
