Rob’s Elite 8 Bracket Update Day 1: I Can Do This All Day (Unfortunately)

A rustic, artistic flat-lay photograph capturing the aftermath of a March Madness bracket collapse. A crumpled, ink-stained paper bracket is the centerpiece on a battle-worn wooden table. Bold, black marker slashes aggressively cross out #9 Iowa and #2 Purdue, while red ink circles #3 Illinois and #1 Arizona as winners. Scattered around the bracket are small, messy Illinois and Arizona pennant flags, an orange March Madness basketball, and a snapped pencil. Leaning against the crumpled paper is a dusty, scratched Captain America shield, symbolizing defiance in defeat. The entire image uses deep, bruised blues, scorched yellows, and charcoal greys, evoking a feeling of hard-fought battle and messy survival.

March Madness continued Saturday with the first of the four “Elite 8” games being played this weekend. Looking at my bracket now, maybe I should have entered the “Sweet 16 Second Chance” challenge instead. But I’m like Captain America with my original bracket: “I can do this all day.” Even if “this” is watching my picks crumble in real-time.

Saturday’s Elite 8 Results & Stats:

#3 Illinois over #9 Iowa | 71-59

• The Turnaround: Iowa came out swinging with a 57% shooting performance in the first half to lead 32-28, but the Illini defense clamped down, outscoring the Hawkeyes 43-27 in the second half.

• Key Stat: Illinois dominated the glass with a +17 rebounding advantage (38-21) and a +28 advantage in points in the paint.

• Top Performer: Freshman Keaton Wagler led all scorers with 25 points.

#1 Arizona over #2 Purdue | 79-64

• The Comeback: Arizona trailed by 7 at the half but opened the second half with a 16-3 run to take control.

• Key Stat: The Wildcats’ defense held Purdue—one of the nation’s most efficient offenses—to just 38% shooting from the field.

• Top Performer: Freshman Koa Peat scored 20 points, earning West Region Most Outstanding Player honors.

Saturday Record: 0/2

I was quite literally out of both of these games before they even started. None of the four teams that I had picked to be playing on Saturday even made it this far in the tournament. Illinois is headed to their first Final Four since 2005, and Arizona snapped a 25-year drought, but neither of them did me any favors on the scorecard.

The Sunday Holdouts:

As it stands, I only have two teams remaining from my original Sunday predictions: Duke and Michigan.

• #1 Michigan vs. #6 Tennessee (2:15 PM ET)

• #1 Duke vs. #2 UConn (5:05 PM ET)
