A close-up photograph of a handwritten 2026 March Madness bracket worksheet. The left Final Four slots show "Michigan def. Arizona 91-73" and "UConn def. Illinois 71-62." A blue pen rests on the paper, having just filled in "MICHIGAN vs. UCONN" in the circled National Championship lines. In the blurred background, a television shows Michigan players celebrating on court amidst confetti.

Making the Final Four in college basketball is not unlike a movie getting nominated for Best Picture. Even if you don’t win the “big one,” it’s a massive honor just to be in the conversation. Of course, in my world, the stakes are a bit higher: I need Michigan to win out in order for my bracket to remain remotely relevant.

Michigan vs Arizona

A lot of people were calling this matchup the de facto National Championship game, and for all intents and purposes, it lived up to the hype—at least for us Wolverines fans.

Final: Michigan 91, Arizona 73

Michigan absolutely dominated the perimeter, shooting a blistering 12-for-27 from beyond the arc. Mara was a force inside, putting up 26 points and 9 rebounds, while Trey McKenney chipped in four triples of his own.

The final score was actually closer than it looked for most of the night. At one point, it seemed like Michigan was going to coast to a 30-point blowout, but Arizona’s Koa Peat (16 points, 11 rebounds) helped the Wildcats claw back into respectability during the second half. Still, Michigan was never truly in danger.

Illinois vs UConn

You can’t deny that Illinois has a great program, but beating Duke in the Elite Eight was a massive upset. As a fan of the Big Ten, I was pulling for an all-conference National Championship game, but I had a feeling the Illini’s luck was about to run out against a surging Huskies squad.

Final: UConn 71, Illinois 62

UConn proved why they are the defending champs for a reason. Tarris Reed Jr. was the difference-maker, notched a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards. Illinois kept it interesting late, pulling within four points with under two minutes to play thanks to a 20-point effort from Keaton Wagler, but they just couldn’t seal the comeback.

Ultimately, UConn won the “privilege” of losing to Michigan on Monday night.

That’s for my entry of the ESPN bracket challenge, Michigan’s victory had me jumped several million spots to 16.3 million out of 20,000,000+. Not great, but I still have a dog in this fight.
