What do you enjoy most about writing?
Where to begin? I love to write because I love telling stories. I like to share my experiences and insights with others. I love la gauge, both written and verbal. I love grammar and syntax. I’ve never been a math person, so grammar and syntax are about as close as I come to a sense of structure.
“I am not solitary whilst I read and write, though nobody is with me”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
I stumbled across that Emerson quote while I was in college and it has stuck with me ever since. Writing takes me to another world. A world that I, as the writer, am creating. It’s universe-building. Writing is almost god-like.
A classmate of mine from my college days once said to “I write so I can breathe”. I always liked that sentiment: the idea that writing is like a reflex that is essential to life. I couldn’t imagine a world without writing; and I cannot imagine a time when I will never want to write.
Writing for me is also very therapeutic in a lot of ways, it’s almost like talking to a counselor. The more I write, more I think about a situation. Through my writing, I’m able to dissect it, analyze it, seeing it from multiple perspectives.
