What’s in a name?

Where did your name come from?

“I’m American, honey. Our names don’t mean shit.”

– Butch Coolidge, Pulp Fiction

I had a great uncle named Robert. He went by Bob. My father’s middle name was also Robert – I assume the middle name came from his uncle/my great-uncle.

I’ve never cared for Bob, or Bobby. It’s always been Robert or just Rob for me. Some of my cousins have addressed me as Robby since I was little, so I let that slide.

Here’s something I found on the meaning of “Robert”:

Robert is an old German name that means “bright fame.” It’s taken from the old German name Hrodebert. The name is made up of two elements: “Hrod” which means fame and “Beraht” which means bright. The name was introduced to the people of England by the Normans in the middle ages.
