Prompt: Do you see yourself as a leader?

Do you see yourself as a leader?

I’ve always thought of myself more as “a leader by example”. When I’m in a group work situation, people generally see me as confident and competent. People who need help will generally gravitate towards someone who knows not only what they are doing, but is also confident about doing it. I also find that when I’m in a situation where there is no leader, I assert myself into that role since no one else will. So in that regard, yes I often see myself as a leader.

As a school teacher, I am thrust into a position of leadership, by default, in my classroom. But the title has no meaning if I don’t take on a leadership role. If I don’t establish expectations, the class will have no direction. Likewise, if if there are no norms in the class, I will have no control. As so many others have said before, a title does not make a leader. Rather, it is the ability to inspire and motivate people to work to the best of their ability that defines leadership.
