Feeling Ferris Bueller

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

I don’t know if this is the most profound, or even the best advice I’ve ever received; but it resonates with me.

Shortly before my wedding day, I was talking to my cousin who has just gotten married a few months prior himself.

He was asking me how preparations were going and how I was feeling (excited, nervous, etc…). He gave me what was undoubtedly the best advice I had gotten about the actual wedding day itself.

He was right, of course. People invest so much time and money into their wedding. They want everything to be perfect for all the guests and their photos and videos. But when you’re one-half of the “guests of honor” you fee obligated to to keep the activities moving and mingle with ALL of your guests. Basically you’re in constant motion for the entire event.

With everything going on in your wedding day, stop and enjoy it every now and then. Take in the moment. It goes SOOO fast”.

I offer this story not because I think everybody will, or should, have a big wedding but because it’s a great example of an event that consumes so much of your time; yet still moves at same rate of 60 seconds per minute.

I fee the same way whenever I see someone trying to capture every moment of an event on their smartphone. I understand the desire to make some lasting memories of a concert or a historic moment in a sporting event; but I personally would not want to have every memory of the birth of my children framed by a smartphone.

Put the phone down every now and then. Look around you. Take in the sights, the sounds, the smells of a moment.

Today’s little Pearl of wisdom was, perhaps, summed up best by Ferris Bueller on his Day Off: “life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it”

Interesting post-script: Both my cousin and I are divorced today; for what it’s worth…

Love this! We live in a society where the majority are continuously plastered to a device. Experiencing, actually experiencing life, is so very important.
