What have you been putting off doing? Why?

As a teacher, one of her requirements is “continuing education”. That is to say that we have to either continue with professional development training, continue to take college classes, or any combination thereof.

I know, for a fact, that if I had my masters degree, I would automatically see an increase in my salary. But for some reason, I have been putting off completing my masters degree.

I think for a long time it was just because I wasn’t ready to be back on the other side of the classroom yet. I was burned out from being a student for all those years. I was enjoying getting paid to sit on the other side of the teachers desk.

But lately, I’ve been thinking more and more about taking semesters levels classes to eventually finish my degree. My problem right now is that I don’t know what I would want my masters degree to be in.

Maybe, on some level, I’m afraid of looking like Billy Madison

Do I get a degree in school administration? Do I get a masters degree in English Lit., my chosen Field? For the most part, I think I could get my masters degree in pretty much whatever I want it to you. Most school districts will just automatically pay you more money if you have the degree. of course, I’m exaggerating slightly. I’m sure there are some limitations in what they consider “acceptable continued education“

I know, this is a first world problem. But this is something that for some stupid reason, I’ve been putting off. A masters degree would look better in a résumé. It would guarantee more money as a teacher. I don’t even think the fact that it would put me further into debt is what’s been holding me back. God knows I have enough dirt to put me in one of those dark ages “debtors prison’s“ for several lifetimes. I’m not afraid of failing. I’m not afraid of doing the work. I’m not even afraid of the workload. I’ve just been stubborn.

But I think the time is coming. Sooner rather than later. I do OK for myself, but I’m sick of living the stereotypical “struggling teacher“ lifestyle. I still start to sweat as I look at my bank balance, and it’s still several days before my next payday. I just don’t want to do that anymore.

I did 100% online M.A. in Teacher Leadership and it was very doable. It is all people teaching so the workload was pretty manageable.

Not at all…Cal State San Bernardino. It was challenging, but not overwhelming. It has helped me become a better leader for sure. A lot of educational psychlogy and leadership theories/ ed tech stuff.
