Be like Star Trek

You have three magic genie wishes, what are you asking for?

I struggle with these “3 wishes” scenarios most of the time. I tired to stay in the spirit of the prompt; rather than wishing for more wishes. Even though my first wish would really make my other two wishes take place, I still listed them as 3 separate things. I’m really flashing my nerd cred with this one. Bear with me. Don’t worry it will make sense…

Wish 1 – I want transporters, like they have on Star Trek.

Can you imagine how easy travel would be if we could beam from one place to another? No more long car rides, no more plane rides. When you get a set time for your vacation from work or school, you would be able to use ALL of that time for vacation. You could go from one place to the next within a few seconds! I would be visiting with Kid 1 all the time!

Wish 2 – I want food replicators, like they have on, yep, Star Trek.

Star Trek tries to apply as much science as they can to their science-fiction. They explain the aforementioned transporters as converting matter into energy, then reassembling that beam of energy into matter in a different location.

By Star Trek: the Next Generation the writers took their fictionalized transporter technology to the next step. If you could turn matter into energy, you just can’t you turn energy into other things…like food? Show runners use this extension of their fictionalized technology to explain how humanity was able to end hunger on Earth.

In Star Trek, food replicators work off of the same principle as transporter beams.

Imagine being able to turn energy into food. Or resequencing a broken chair or an old car into food.

If you can turn people into energy back; and you can turn one form of matter into another, this would lead to…

Wish 3 – No more Greed

Matter / energy conversion would make money worthless. With matter replication, we wouldn’t need to buy anything; we would be able to replicate whatever they needed. If people could have anything they wanted or needed, people would no longer be greedy. Materialism as we know it would cease to exist and a new Age of Enlightenment would begin. Instead of having the nicest car or house, people would dedicate their lives to improving themselves. People would actually want to learn stuff again. They would dedicate their lives to improving thee quality of life for every one.

What would you wish for if you had 3 genie wishes?

I like the list! I was thinking about the transporter… I kept thinking about getting mixed in with others on the same ride. That wouldn’t be fun. Unfortunately, I’d have that food replicator send me a burger and pizza all day. I wonder if I can order that with an exercise replicator on the side

Transporter malfunctions have become something of a Star Trek trope: people getting split, doubled, combined with some else, turned into kids.

One time they even had a guy who was afraid of using a transporter.

Sure, ask the hard question. The original goes really deep although most people don’t see it, TNG has got Picard, so cool, and so nerdy, I love it. I was secretly in love with Data for… who am I kidding, I’m still in love with him, Voyager has Janeway, so sweet, DS9 isn’t on my top list, maybe because it’s kind of a space soap opera? Enterprise is good too. I like the reboot movies. But the newest show I can’t seem to get into. It’s soooo different, and edgy, and I’m too nerdy and awkward for it. 😕

Here’s my take on all of them

TOS – the original. Some great stories but REALLY shows it’s ages at times.

TNG – the one that for me I to the franchise and my sentimental favorite . Worf is my favorite character

DS9 – it was as good as TNG, but was also willing to try serialized storytelling.

VOY – my least favorite, but it still has some high points. There may be a blog post coming about this one

ENT – a neat premise, but the show runners were just spent by this one.

DISCO – it took too long to find it’s footing, but it have us…

SNW – easily the best trek since DS9.

LD – this is an animated love letter all Trek! Also it’s not afraid to poke fun of the franchise

Prodigy – I only saw a few episodes before it got cancelled. I may check it out on Netflix.
