Not enough time on my hands

Do you need time?

This is kind of an odd question; one that I think can be taken more than one way.

Do humans need more time? I think that we need more downtime; but I don’t think we need more hours in a day. My problem with something like a 26 hour day would be that, particularly in this society, the world would try to find a way to demand more of us. I think the 10 hour workday would become the norm for most people again. And there would be more expectations, more activity is to take part in. What people need is more downtime; more time to relax, more time to enjoy life in general.

Do I personally need more time? Absolutely! I could use a 26 hour day. There’s so much more I could get done in a 26 hour day: more time to work out, get papers graded, more time to sleep, more time to read. I could find plenty of things to do with 2 extra hours in a day.

Life would give us more to get done, rather than allowing us sufficient time to finish the things we need to do in a single day.

However, as I mentioned above, I fear that with a longer day, the world would place more demands upon us. Life would give us more to get done, rather than allowing us sufficient time to finish the things we need to do in a single day.

NOTE: my choice for a 26 hour day was an arbitrary one. On the show Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the planet Bajor, which served as one of the show’s backdrops, had a 26-hour day.

  • Do you need more time?
  • If so, do you prefer longer days? Longer years?
  • If we had “more time” would you be concerned that life would place even more demand upon you?
