It’s technically not my city, but there plenty to do in Detroit. No it’s not New York. Or Chicago. Or Los Angeles, or any other relatively big city in America. But the fact remains that Detroit has a pretty bad, reputation nationally, and even globally. It is a reputation that I took nearly 50 years to create. But in the last 20 years, the city, particularly the downtown area, has made a remarkable comeback. My favorite thing to do in Detroit is going to Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers. I know, big surprise, coming from the baseball geek.
Aside from just loving the game itself, I love the experience of going to a baseball game. I just enjoy being out in the sun with some family or friends. There’s something about stepping inside those four walls of a ballpark. Somehow, I’m able to just forget about what’s going on in the rest of the world for those few hours while I’m at a baseball game.

Comerica Park checks off all the boxes of a contemporary, major league, baseball stadium: downtown setting , impressive view of the skyline, modern amenities like luxury boxes, and premium seating. Comerica Park also has plenty of distractions for the kids…

Probably the biggest reason I like baseball so much is because of my family. Yes, we cheer on the lions, the Pistons, and the Red Wings through the rest of the year; but it is the baseball season that marked the passage of time in our house growing up.
Since the park opened in 2000, I’ve been lucky enough to attend several home openers (including the inaugural game in 2000) as well as the 2005 All Star Game. I’ve also attended a handful postseason games, including game 1 of the 2006 World Series.
As much as I enjoyed all of those milestone games, my greatest memories of Comerica Park are the little things. I always say that little things are the big things. For me, it’s those random Thursday afternoon midseason games that are often meaningless, especially with a sub 500 team. it’s taking my kids there, and nurturing love of the game in them. It’s going there with a friend and feeling like all is right with the world. I even like taking dates there; so they can experience this part of me that I am so passionate about.
On Facebook, I’m a member of a group called “ballpark chasers“ that is dedicated to fans, looking to attend games and all major league, baseball stadiums; as well as international, college and minor-league games one of the things I noticed in the group this past season was how many people who said that Comerica Park, and Detroit, in general, exceeded their expectations. Furthermore, a lot of fans said that it is actually their favorite current MLB stadium! I started my own “ballpark chase“ in earnest this past year, and… well, I’m a homer…
What is your favorite thing to do in your city?
